Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season

OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season on Thursday afternoon against Creighton. The Bluejays defeated the Broncos by a final score of 3-0.

FIRST HALF
The Broncos came out aggressive and got the first quality look of the afternoon. Jenna Blackburn sent a pass to Callie Cunningham, who had a shot headed off the line by the Bluejays defense.

A few minutes after that, Creighton would score to take a 1-0 lead. However, after that, the Brown and Gold went back on the attack. Madi Canada played a nice ball into the box where Jen Blitchok had her header just miss the right side of the net.

Despite having multiple great chances, Creighton would again make the most of its opportunities, netting another goal just moments after Blitchok's chance. The Bluejays led 2-0 15 minutes into the game.

As the game progressed to the back half of the first 45 minutes, neither team could find much offense. The Broncos got a late shot from Blitchok but would end up going into the halftime break trailing 2-0.

SECOND HALF
The Broncos came out aggressive in the second half, getting a few good looks out front of the net in the opening minutes of the half. However, Creighton would keep the Brown and Gold off the board to begin the half.

As the game progressed, WMU showed some fight on defense, blocking a pair of quality looks from the Bluejays to remain within two goals. Following those two chances, Blitchok got a great look of her own that Creighton goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac was able to handle.

Another near miss for the Broncos occurred moments later, as Blitchok's header off of a corner kick missed just over the net. As they did all day, though, the Bluejays made the most of another opportunity to go in front 3-0 with about 15 minutes left in the game.

WMU would get a few more quality looks down the stretch of the game, but Zalac would keep them all out of the net. In the end, the Broncos would drop their first game of the season.

UP NEXT
The Broncos will remain on the road for a game against Wisconsin. The game is set for Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2 PM.
