KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 6-2 in Mid-American Conference play after a crucial, 5-2, win over Ball State at West Hills Athletic Club for Senior Day.
With the win, the Broncos (14-5, 6-2 MAC) move up and take sole possession of second place in the MAC standings with two matches remaining.
DOUBLES
The Broncos earned the doubles point after wins at No. 1 and No. 2, but it was the Cardinals that put the pressure on first after Eli Herran and Parrish Simmons defeated
Ferdinand Schlueter and
Matej Kajzer, 6-2, at No. 3.
Benjamin George and
Drew Evans evened things up after a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Mason Tran and Sajin Smith. It was the No. 1 pair of
Anton Arzhankin and Jackson Boon that secured the point for Western Michigan, defeating Nathaniel Webster and Vince Orlando, 6-4.
SINGLES
George gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kalamazoo native Nathaniel Webster at No. 1. The Cardinals got on the board shortly after, with Jacks Lancaster defeating Kajzer at No. 5, 6-3, 6-3. WMU then rattled off three-straight wins, with Arzhankin downing Orland 7-5, 6-2 to push the lead to 3-1. Boone took down Tran in three sets at No. 4, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 for the match-winning point. Ashton Adesoro then picked up a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win over Herran at No. 3 for the fifth and final point.
The Broncos are off the rest of the weekend, but finish off the regular season on the road at UIC next Friday and MAC-leaders Northern Illinois on Sunday.
