CHICAGO, Ill. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team earned a 6-1 win at UIC on Friday afternoon, setting up a showdown for the Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship at Northern Illinois on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Broncos improved to 7-2 in MAC play with the win, matching NIU, who defeated Ball State on Friday.
DOUBLES
The Broncos secured the doubles point after wins at No. 1 and No. 3, but had to overcome an early loss at No. 2 by Aleksa Bucan and Robinson Lemeur.
Ashton Adesoro was teamed up with
Ferdinand Schlueter for the first time in MAC play and defeated UIC's Edoardo Bottino and Gustavo Schwebel, 6-4 at No. 3, to tie it up at 1-1. The point came down to WMU's
Anton Arzhankin and
Jackson Boone against the Flames' Mihailo Savic and Randy Wilson. Arzhankin and Jackson came out on top, 7-5.
SINGLES
Freshman
Dimitri Moriarty gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead after a 6-1, 6-2 win over Elliot Dam at No. 6. Boone then pushed the lead to 3-0 after a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bottino at No. 4. Arzhankin clinched the match-winning point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1. UIC got on the board after Bucan defeated Adesoro 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2).
Matej Kajzer pushed the lead to 5-1 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Schwebel at No. 5, before
Benjamin George closed it out with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Lemeur. George's win pushed his record in MAC play to 9-0.
The Broncos and the Huskies battle it out for the MAC Championship at NIU on Sunday. The winner will also take the No. 1 seed to the MAC Tournament next weekend in Toledo.
