Men's Tennis Wins 29th MAC Regular Season Championship

SYCAMORE, Ill. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team overcame a 3-0 deficit to win the program's 29th Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship after a 4-3 win at Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
 
After winning the doubles point, the Huskies went up 3-0 after singles wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Armin Koschtojan defeated freshman Matej Kajzer, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5. Christopher Norlin then defeated Adrian Quiros, 6-4, 6-3 to put the Broncos in a big hole.
 
Then the comeback started.
 
Senior Benjamin George did what he has done all season in MAC play, win. George was slotted at No. 2 against Mikael Vollbach and took the first set, 6-4, and then the second set, 6-2. The win gave George a perfect 10-0 record in conference play.
 
With the lead cut the 3-1, it was fellow senior Jackson Boone's turn. Boone dropped his opening set to Saul Berdullas 4-6, but responded with two quick wins of 6-2, 6-1 to cut the lead to one.
 
Freshman Ashton Adesoro then tied up the match at 3-3. The St. Paul, Min., native narrowly won the first set, 7-6 (7-3), over Iker Gaztambide. The two then battled to a 4-4 tie in the second set, with Adesoro taking the final too for a 6-4 win.
 
It all came down to WMU's Anton Arzhankin and NIU's Cheng En Tsai for the MAC Championship. Arzhankin opened the match with a 7-6 (7-1) win to take the early advantage. The Moscow, Russia, native then took the second set, 6-2, for the match win and the championship.
 
The MAC Regular Season Championship is the 14th for WMU head coach Dave Morin.
 
Western Michigan has earned the No. 1 seed for the 2024 MAC Tournament Championship next Saturday and Sunday.
