Broncos Shine at Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Western Michigan track and field team continued its strong outdoor season by posting more PR's, along with Kayla Schiera earning the second best 1,500-meter run time in program history. 

Schiera crossed the finish line in a time of 4:24.23, missing the school record by less than half a second. Annalise James and Lillian Zelasko were able to earn PR's in the race, notching times of 4:35.29 and 4:39.35, respectively. Danielle Rinn concluded the race with a time of 4:36.99. 

Another PR came out of the 5,000-meter run, as Brooke Soper finished her race with a time of 17:31.98. Then, in the 400-meter hurdles, Mabinty Kebe was able to finish with a time of 59.78, which nearly cracked the school's top 10. Claira Gilchrist collected a time of 1:08.16 in the event. 

Heading to the sprints, Kebe was able to qualify for the 100-meter hurdles final. She grabbed a time of 14.26 to finish sixth in the event. Soniya Jones then qualified for the 100-meter dash final with a time of 11.98. 

To close out the running portion of the meet, Jones, Kebe, Laurie-Ann Desormes and Layla Wallace had a great race in the 4x100 relay. That team posted a time of 47.26. 

Moving to the field portion of the meet, the throwers continued to show improvement. In the shot put, Bri'Yanna Robinson finished third with a throw of 14.51 meters. Lane Hagens was great as well, notching a mark of 12.80 meters. 

In the discus, Robinson paced the Broncos with a throw of 43.17 meters. Tess Van Dyk wasn't far behind with a mark of 42.25 meters. Hagens and Mariah Sackett finished with throws of 39.63 meters and 37.31 meters, respectively. 

The final events for the Brown and Gold were the long jump and triple jump, which featured Anichka Malachi. Malachi finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 11.71 meters. She was able to earn 10th in the long jump with a mark of 5.49 meters. 

UP NEXT
The Broncos will conclude the regular season with a trip to the Clark Wood Open next weekend. The meet is hosted by Louisville and will take place on April 26-27.
