KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan is set to host the Jack Shaw Invitational this weekend, with the action beginning on Friday, April 12. The meet will conclude on Saturday, April 13. Both days will begin at 11 a.m. at the Kanley Track.
SCHIERA'S RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE
Kayla Schiera shattered the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase back on March 29 at the Raleigh Relays, posting a time of 10:03.93. Her time is more than 30 seconds faster than the next best time in program history. Furthermore, she currently sits at first in the Mid-American Conference and third in the nation with that time. She beat four All Americans from other programs in the event.
For that performance, Schiera was awarded the MAC Track Athlete of the Week award. She is the second Bronco to earn a MAC Weekly Award so far this track season.
TOP-10 MARKS CONTINUE TO ROLL IN
Outside of Schiera, the Broncos were strong in other events.
Danielle Rinn,
Lillian Zelasko,
Anichka Malachi and
Mabinty Kebe all notched top-10 marks in program history a couple weeks ago. Rinn and Zelasko now sit sixth and seventh in the 5,000-meter run. Rinn posted a time of 16:46.37, while Zelasko finished the race in a time of 16:52.66.
Malachi was strong in the triple jump, collecting the ninth best mark in school history. She leaped a distance of 11.84 meters at the Bobcat Invitational. Rounding out the top-10 marks was Kebe, who raced her way into the 400-meter hurdles final at the Texas Relays. Her time of 59.15 was the 10th fastest in program history.
MCGRATH AND SACKETT POST PR'S
Larissa McGrath and
Mariah Sackett were strong last weekend at the Spartan Invite, with each posting major PR's. McGrath began the meet with a career-best time of 17:45.79 in the 5K, which is nearly 10 seconds faster than her previous best time. Sackett then had a PR throw of 39.62 in the discus. That throw was a personal-best by nearly 13 meters.
