KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 5-2 win over UIC at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.
DOUBLES
UIC struck first to earn the doubles point, picking up a pair of 6-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2 it was Edoardo Bottino and Gustavo Schwebel defeating
Benjamin George and
Drew Evans. Aleksa Bucan and Robinson Le Meur picked up the win at No. 3 over
Ferdinand Schlueter and
Adrian Quiros. WMU's top pair of
Anton Arzhankin and
Jackson Boone had a 5-4 advantage but the match went unfinished.
SINGLES
Boone tied up the match at 1-1 after making quick work of Bottino at No. 4, 6-2, 6-0. Shortly after, George gave WMU the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bucan at No. 2. Le Meur squared the match up at 2-2 after defeating
Ashton Adesoro 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, but freshman
Dimitri Moriarty put the Broncos back on top with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mihailo Savic at No. 6. Junior
Anton Arzhankin earned the decisive point at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Randy Wilson to give the Broncos the victory. Freshman
Matej Kajzer added Western Michigan's fifth and final point with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 5 over Schwebel.
Arzhankin and Kajzer both extended singles win streak to six matches, while the Broncos pushed their overall win streak to seven matches.
The Broncos are back at it again on Sunday, hosting Northern Illinois at 12 p.m. at West Hills Athletic Club. Admission is free.
