KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Senior
Sam Colangelo's third period-goal was the difference in Western Michigan's 3-2 victory over Miami on Friday night at Lawson Arena.
Alongside Colangelo, the Broncos got goals from
Luke Grainger and
Matteo Costantini.
Cameron Rowe made 18 saves in net, including a big stop to secure the victory with time winding down in the final period.
FIRST PERIOD
After some back-and-forth action to begin the game, Miami netted the game's first goal just over six minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. Not even 30 seconds later, however, Miami was sent to the penalty box for hooking.
On the man advantage, Colangelo and
Alex Bump would get looks on net, but the RedHawks would eventually get back to full strength. As the game moved by the middle portion of the period,
Dylan Wendt and
Samuel Sjolund had looks to tie the game. Nothing would find the back of the net, though.
Down the stretch of the frame, both teams received penalties, and Miami entered the second period with a 1-0 lead.
SECOND PERIOD
After both players exited the penalty box, Miami would tally another goal to extend its lead to 2-0. From there, it was all Broncos. A few minutes after that goal, the RedHawks were assessed a tripping penalty.
About a minute into the power play, Grainger ripped a shot just under the crossbar to bring WMU back within one. Assists went to Wendt and Sjolund.
Later in the period, WMU would kill off a slashing penalty. Miami didn't generate a shot on the man advantage. As the period started to tick down, the puck found the stick of Costantini and he knew exactly what to do with it.
He lit the lamp with just over two minutes to play in the frame. The two squads entered the final period tied at 2-2.
THIRD PERIOD
It didn't take long for WMU to capitalize on that momentum, as Colangelo made some nice moves in front of the net before scoring the go-ahead goal just over four minutes into the third frame.
Three seconds after the goal, WMU went on the power play again. However, nothing would come of the man advantage, and the game remained 3-2 moving to the back half of the final 20 minutes.
Trailing by one, Miami pulled its goalie, with Bump and Wendt just missing chances on the open net. Eventually WMU would pick up a penalty, giving the Red Hawks a 6-on-4 advantage with 18 seconds remaining in the game.
Miami won the draw, but
Chad Hillebrand came up with a huge blocked shot to clear the zone. The RedHawks had one more shot on goal that Rowe was able to keep out of the net to give the Broncos a 3-2 victory.
UP NEXT
WMU and Miami will finish the regular season tomorrow night at Lawson Arena. Puck drop is at 6 p.m., with senior day festivities set for pregame.
