Softball Team Secures Weekend Sweep Over Akron

Kalamazoo, Mich. –- The Western Michigan softball team completed a series sweep over the University of Akron with a 3-2 win over the Zips Saturday. Payton Kelly would see a game-high two hits in the Broncos series ending victory, while Rissa Bajusz collected 10 strikeouts to lead WMU to the series win.

Despite trialing early with a two-run deficit in the first inning, the Broncos battled back by combining for a total of six hits, including a home run from Rissa Bajusz, to give WMU their fifth straight victory.

The Broncos saw their 2-0 deficit after the Zips opened game two with two runs in the top of the first inning. Over the next five innings, neither team would score and the Brown and Gold were limited to a total of three hits. Eventually, WMU saw themselves down to their last three outs in the bottom of the seventh.

To lead off the final inning, Riley Chumbley would single to put a runner on first with no outs. Bajusz would follow Chumbley's single with her first home run of the season, which propelled the softball team to a 2-2 tie. As the Brown and Gold continued to pick up base runners, Garey walked to put one on, and nobody out to continue the offensive attack. After WMU recorded back-to-back outs, including a ground out from Kailey O'Connor, which advanced Garey to second base, Dittmar would walk, which brought Gabbie Evans to the plate. Evans delivered in the clutch and singled to the left field side. Her single scored Wolfe for the game-winning run for the Broncos and WMU collected their fifth consecutive win in a row Saturday.

Historical Notes

With her 10 strikeouts today, Bajusz has now collected 424 K's on her career. Her 424 punchouts ranks fourth all-time in program history in the WMU career strikeout category. Bajusz now trails Reily Galloway (2018-2022) by 32 strikeouts for sole possession of the third most strikeouts accumulated for the WMU softball team.
