Women's Tennis Downs Ball State for First Time Since 2019

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team improved to 2-2 in Mid-American Conference play after downing Ball State, 4-3, indoors at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday morning.
 
The win over BSU was the first for WMU since the 2018-19 season.
 
DOUBLES
The Cardinals (5-11, 2-2 MAC) came out of the gate strong in doubles play, quickly taking the point after wins of 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 2.
 
SINGLES
The Broncos (11-6, 2-2 MAC) responded in kind in singles action, earning all four points in succession with two-set wins. Junior Polina Khotko got the Broncos on the board with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sydney Hrehor at No. 4. Sophomore Audrey Smitek put WMU ahead, 2-1, with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Ella Hazelbaker. Senior Lindsey Zieglar then extended the lead to 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Annika Planinsek at No. 1. The match-clinching point came courtesy of fellow senior Karin Hamilton. Hamilton earned a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Sarah Shabaz.
 
Western Michigan is back in action next weekend, heading to Buffalo on Friday before returning to Kalamazoo to host Northern Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
