TOLEDO, Ohio – The Western Michigan men's tennis team extended its winning streak to 10 matches after a hard-fought, 4-3, victory at Toledo on Sunday.
The match was tied at 3-3 and came down to the No. 2 singles match between WMU's
Benjamin George and UT's Marko Galic. Galic took the first set, 6-3, but George responded with a 6-4 win in the second. George then dispatched of Galic, 6-3, in the third and final set to clinch the win for Western Michigan (12-3, 4-0 MAC).
DOUBLES
The Broncos earned the doubles point for the second-straight match, winning at No. 2 and No. 3. The pair of
Benjamin George and
Drew Evans defeated Hanamichi Carvajal and Poonthong Komolpisut, 6-3. at No. 2.
Ferdinand Schlueter and
Matej Kajzer clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Cole Cozens and Adam Kovac at No. 3.
SINGLES
Toledo tied the match up at 1-1 after Carvajal defeated
Jackson Boone 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, but WMU freshman
Ashton Adesoro defeated Kovac at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1. The Broncos extended the lead to 3-1 when Anton Arzankin defeated 88th-ranked and reigning MAC Player of the Year Pawit Sornlaksup 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). The win by Arzhankin ended Sornlaksup's 22-match MAC singles win streak, which dated back to 2021-22.
Toledo's Matias Olivero defeated
Dimitri Moriarty 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 to cut WMU's lead down to 3-2 and Komolpisut defeated Kajzer 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 5 to it all up at 3-3 before George prevailed for the Broncos.
Western Michigan stays on the road next week, heading to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State on Friday at 1 p.m.
