ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Western Michigan used five goals in the third period and a
Sam Colangelo hat trick to pick up a crucial win in game two of the NCHC Quarterfinals against St. Cloud State. The Broncos posted a 6-1 victory over the Huskies.
Along with Colangelo's hat trick,
Dylan Wendt tallied two goals, while
Luke Grainger added the other. Grainger's three-point night helped him surpass 100 points for his career, becoming the 61st player in program history to reach that mark.
FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos controlled the first period, outshooting the Huskies by a total of 15-4. After a SCSU shot to open the game, WMU would go on to get the next four shots on net. Two came from
Alex Bump, while
Carter Berger and Colangelo got one each.
About 11 minutes into the opening 20 minutes, SCSU was sent off for tripping, giving the Brown and Gold the game's first power play. Colangelo and Berger had looks on SCSU netminder Isak Posch, but the score remained 0-0 heading down the stretch.
In the back end of the period, Grainger and
Chad Hillebrand nearly got the Broncos on the board, but the two teams would head to the first intermission without anything on the scoreboard.
SECOND PERIOD
St. Cloud State picked up a penalty in the opening minute of the second 20 minutes. However, the Broncos couldn't muster up many chances. St. Cloud State eventually got back to full strength.
After the power play expired,
Tim Washe had a pair of shots on Posch, while Hillebrand got another. From there, WMU was sent off for cross checking. The Huskies were only able to get on look on net before
Cameron Rowe and the Broncos got back to even strength.
Less than a minute after the power play expired, SCSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead, taking advantage of an odd-man rush. In the back half of the period, Western Michigan killed off a tripping penalty and went to work on offense.
With just under three minutes to go in the middle frame, Colangelo took matters into his own hands, weaving his way through the SCSU defense to even the game at 1-1. Bump and
Cedric Fiedler got the assists. The two team would go to third period tied.
THIRD PERIOD
The Broncos came out and dominated the final period, getting a power play in the opening two minutes of action. It didn't take long for the Brown and Gold to strike, as Wendt knocked a puck out of the air into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Following the WMU goal, SCSU had a power play killed off by the Broncos. The Huskies got just one shot on the man advantage. The flood gates opened for WMU in the back half of the period, starting with a power-play goal with under eight to play.
Grainger got a pass from Wendt and he ripped a shot underneath the crossbar for a 3-1 WMU lead. A few minutes after that, Colangelo cleaned up a loose puck in front of the net and made it a 4-1 game.
Colangelo completed his third hat trick of the season, hitting the empty net late in the third. But the Broncos were not done there, as Wendt tallied his second of the game to help finish off a 6-1 victory for the Brown and Gold.
