Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Hockey Downs Omaha, 6-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan stayed hot on offense, grabbing a 6-1 victory over No. 19 Omaha on Friday night at Lawson Arena.

Sam Colangelo and Alex Bump each had two goals, while Luke Grainger and Hugh Larkin each chipped in one. Goaltender Cameron Rowe saved 23 shots and collected the 50th win of his career. He is just the fourth active goaltender in the NCAA with 50 or more victories.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos were sent off for too many men on the ice early in the game, but they were able to kill off the penalty with ease. The WMU penalty kill allowed just one shot on goal. Just a few moments after killing off the penalty, Carter Berger hit Larkin in front of the goal, and he put the Brown and Gold in front 1-0 just over five minutes into the game.

About four minutes later, Grainger found himself on a two-on-one break and fired a wrist shot by the goaltender to extend the WMU lead to 2-0 midway through the first frame.

Down the stretch, WMU would pick up another penalty, but the Broncos again stood tall and kept it a two-goal game heading into the second 20 minutes.

SECOND PERIOD
After a slow start to the second frame, Western Michigan found some life and started to carry possession. Eventually, Jacob Bauer fired a shot on net that was tipped by Colangelo in front for a 3-0 WMU lead.

Moments after that, Colangelo nearly made it a four-goal lead as his shot hit the left post. Matteo Costantini, Colangelo and Zak Galambos would each get looks on net following that play.

WMU would carry a three-goal lead into the final period.

THIRD PERIOD
Omaha scored a goal in the opening minute to make it a 3-1 game. However, just a few minutes later, Bump was there to respond with his first goal of the night. That helped WMU regain a three-goal edge.

In the middle of the third frame, Western Michigan got its first look on the power play. Bump nearly netted his second of the night, but the Mavericks would get back to full strength.

With time winding down, Omaha pulled its goalie, and WMU promptly scored on the empty net. Colangelo tallied his 19th goal of the season.

Then, the Mavericks were given a penalty for cross checking. The Broncos only needed six seconds to score on the man advantage, as Bump found the back of the net after some nice passing out front.

Western Michigan would go on to close out a 6-1 victory and pick up its 17th win of the season.

UP NEXT
