KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team picked up its third straight victory after defeating Chicago State, 5-2, at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
DOUBLES
The doubles point came down to the No. 1 battle between WMU's duo of Lindsey Zieglar and Valeriya Monko against Muanella Eloundou and Nia Cooper. The teams had split the other two, with Chicago State taking No. 2, 6-2, and the Broncos Polina Khotko and Ariane Souligny picked up a win at No. 3, 6-2.
At No. 1, CSU's pair jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Zieglar and Monko battled back to tie it up at 3-3 before taking a 4-3 lead. The teams ended up tied at 5-5, but Zieglar and Monko won the next two to secure the point.
SINGLES
Zieglar put the Broncos ahead 2-0 after quickly dispatching Katarina Dukic at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2. Ethel Li got the Cougars on the board after a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Audrey Smitek at No. 5. Monko got the Broncos within a point of victory after a 7-5, 6-3, win at No. 3 over Eloundou. Khotko sealed the victory, putting WMU up 4-1, after a 7-5, 6-3 win over Amina Taibi. Karin Hamilton added the fifth and final point for the Broncos with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Sofiya Sedovich.
