SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After an impressive opening day at the Meyo Invitational yesterday afternoon, the Western Michigan track and field team picked up right where it left off this afternoon on the final day of competition. The Broncos have now opened the indoor season with five straight meets with at least one top-10 mark in program history.
Anichka Malachi opened the meet by earning a jump of 11.47 meters in the triple jump. That was good for eighth place in the event. Following that,
Bri'Yanna Robinson,
Kennedy Hagens,
Lane Hagens and
Mariah Sackett competed in the weight throw. Robinson paced the Broncos with a mark of 16.19 meters. Kennedy had a throw of 15.27 meters, Lane posted a mark of 13.49 meters and Sackett earned a distance of 11.60 meters.
The Broncos shined in the mile run, with
Danielle Rinn and
Kayla Schiera entering the program's record book. Rinn posted the seventh best time in school history (4:53.09) and Schiera grabbed the ninth best time in program history (4:53.32).
Annalise James also competed in the event and posted a time of 4:56.69.
Mabinty Kebe then competed in the 400-meter dash, earning a time of 57.25. After that, Schiera and
Maggie Raab had strong showings in the 800-meter run. Scheria had a time of 2:14.47, while Raab notched a time of 2:20.34.
In the 60-meter hurdle finals,
Sandra Ferrari was able to place third with a time of 8.48. To end the meet,
Soniya Jones,
Laurie-Ann Desormes,
Layla Wallace and Kebe were able to cross the finish line in a time of 3:55.39 in the 4x400 relay.
UP NEXT
WMU will split up next week and compete at the GVSU Big Meet and David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Both meets will run from Feb. 9-10.
