Women’s Hoops Drops Midweek Contest At Ohio University

ATHENS, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's basketball team lost to Ohio University on the road 67-64 Wednesday, despite Kaitlyn Zarycki's game high 24 points.

During the first quarter of play the Broncos were on fire and shot 50% from three point range for a total of five treys beyond the arch during the first 10 minutes of play. In the first quarter, Zarycki would make three of her six three pointers on the evening to lead the Brown and Gold with nine points (3-3 from three). After falling behind 16-10, Artemis Kouki and Zarycki combined for three treys during the final two minutes of the quarter to complete a 9-0 Bronco run to cap off the first.

Later in the second quarter, the Broncos scored 16 points from a balanced attack of Jasmine Elder, Kouki, Zarycki, De'Ahna Richardson, and Hannah Spitzley. During the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter the Brown and Gold created a five point buffer after Elder capitalized on two free throws and Kouki knocked down a jumper with 8:40 to go until the break. Ohio would respond by completing a 15-3 run over the next five and a half minutes to take a seven point lead over the Brown and Gold. To halt the run Richardson and Spitzley would supply buckets for the Broncos. Continuing the offensive momentum, Zarycki knocked down a three and a two point jumper to close out the half on a personal 5-0 scoring spurt. The Broncos trailed 38-35 entering the break.

After halftime, WMU scored a team best 20 points in the third quarter. In the third, WMU would face multiple six point deficits, but refused to fold. After trailing by six with three minutes remaining in the third, Richardson would splash a trey to cut the Ohio lead in half. Zarycki would follow up with a pair of free throws and a layup, to bring WMU within a single point at 53-52 in favor of Ohio. To conclude the quarter, Richardson would nail a three pointer to tie the game up at 55 all entering the fourth.

Despite limiting the Bobcats to 12 points in the fourth quarter, the Broncos only scored nine points in the final frame. After trailing 60-55 midway through the quarter, Spitzley would end the Bronco scoring drought by splitting a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to four points. After another standstill between the two teams, Spitzley would return to the line and continued to chip at the Bobcat lead with an additional pair of free throws with 2:46 left to play. After a three by Ohio, Zarycki would respond with a three of her own to make it a one possession game with just under two minutes remaining. Eventually, freshman Muguira Orbe would drain a clutch three pointer to tie the game at 64 with 36 seconds remaining. However, Ohio would respond with a game winning three with under 10 seconds remaining to close out regulation Wednesday night.

Historical Notes

Zarycki's six treys made tonight is tied for the fourth most three pointers made during a single game for the women's basketball team. Additionally, the guard from Niles, Michigan moved up eight places tonight on the WMU single season scoring list after her 24 point outing. Zarycki now owns the 10th most points scored in a single season with 493 points and counting.

As for Spitzley, her two three pointers this evening improved her total to 76 three pointers made during her career. Spitzley is now tied with Sarah Hurrle (2000-01) for 21st all-time in three pointers made for the Brown and Gold.
