WMU Student-Athletes Post Record Academic Numbers During Fall Semester

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan's athletic programs continued their unprecedented academic success during the Fall Semester of 2024.
 
Overall, the Broncos tied their highest Fall GPA ever at 3.38. WMU's women's programs recorded their highest Fall GPA and second-highest semester GPA at 3.65. The men's programs combined for a 3.20 GPA. Individually, 96 student-athletes posted a 4.0 for a new school record.
 
"I want to congratulate our student-athletes on another record breaking semester in the classroom," said Lorne Robertson, WMU Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration, Academics and Compliance.  "I can not express enough how proud I am of their dedication to excelling both on and off the field of play, continuously setting new records in the classroom while competing at the level they did this fall is very impressive and a testament to the dedication to holistic development we try to live everyday here at WMU. I am so very proud of the dedicated and tireless work performed by our Academic support staff, our coach's emphasis on the importance of academics, and the partnerships across our entire campus community."
 
The Western Michigan cross country team posted its highest GPA on record, with a 3.77. The MAC Championship women's soccer team also posted its best GPA at 3.80. Ten teams in total had a 3.50 or higher. The men's basketball team recorded its second-highest GPA in the history of the program with a 3.41, while the football team increased it's GPA by .10 from last Fall.
 
"We are all so proud of the work of our student-athletes," said Vice President/Director of Athletics, Dan Bartholomae. "To present this type of academic success in a term when all of our programs broke athletic records and had post-season success is a testament to the types of athletes and coaches we have at WMU.  I am grateful for their work, as well as the important guidance they receive from our faculty and academic advising team."
 
The WMU Golf program had the top GPA for the semester at 3.82.
 
"Congratulations to all the student athletes who excelled in the classroom in Fall 2024," said WMU Faculty Athletics Representative, Gary Bischof. "It is awesome to see the record-setting and record-tying GPAs for this fall. Thanks to the academic advising staff who assist WMU's student-athletes! It's very impressive to see that a quarter of our student athletes achieved a 4.0! Our Broncos are excelling both in competitions and in the classroom!"
 
Overall, 82 percent (324) of all student-athletes had a GPA of 3.00 or higher, while 61 percent (239) had a 3.50.
