Spitzley and Asensio’s Combined 33 Paces Broncos in Win Over PVAMU

 

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan University women's basketball team defeated Prairie View A&M University Tuesday 87-58. In the victory, four Broncos scored in double figures including graduate student Hannah Spitzley and junior Marina Asensio, who combined for 28 points. 

In the opening frame, WMU built a 10-point lead over the Panthers by limiting their foes to 25% from the field. After Prairie View cut the Brown and Gold's lead to one with 4:33 remaining in the first, the Broncos concluded the quarter on a 9-0 run to create a 17-7 lead entering the second quarter.  During the run, Asensio, D'Myjah Bolds, and Alli Carlson, all supplied field goals for the women's basketball team, while Lauren Audino capped off the first quarter with a free throw. 

The Broncos scored a game-best 29 points in the second quarter behind a scorching 12-19 shooting display from the field. With less than five minutes remaining in the half, WMU doubled up Prairie View 14-7 to take a 46-21 lead into the break. The Broncos would see their largest lead of the quarter at 31 with 1:38 remaining after freshman Alli Harness knocked down back-to-back three-point buckets. Tonight, Harness made a career-high three three-pointers on an efficient three-for-four clip from distance.  WMU entered the half with a comfortable 46-21 lead. 

In the third, the Broncos would maintain their advantage over the Panthers with a 24-point quarter after capitalizing on eight free throws. Lauren Audino led the Broncos out of the break by scoring five points within the first three minutes of the third quarter. Tonight, Audino scored a season-high nine points and added four rebounds for The Brown and Gold. With 2:40 remaining in the third, freshman Sarah Rekowski's layup pushed WMU's lead to 30.

During the fourth and final frame, Spitzley, Asensio, Rekowski, and Bolds all scored field goals to lead WMU offensively.  With 3:04 remaining, the Broncos closed the door on PVAMU with a layup by Rekowski from an assisting Megan Wagner to put the Brown and Gold ahead by 31.

Historical Notes 

Spitzley improved her career three-point total to 92 treys and counting this evening. The graduate student from Westphalia moved into a tie with Leighah-Amori Wool (2017-2020) for the 18th most threes made in program history. 

Wagner's four assists improved her career total to 235, which is the 16th most assists recorded all-time in program history.
