KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan University men's soccer team bowed out of the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Broncos suffered a 2-1 overtime defeat to the University of Evansville at WMU Soccer Complex. During the contest, Noah James scored his seventh goal of the season for the Brown and Gold.
"Congratulations to Evansville, they took their moments on the day and got to move on. We haven't been beaten on our home field in some time, credit to Evansville." Said WMU men's soccer head coach Chad Wiseman.
After the first 45 minutes of play, The Brown and Gold and The Purple Aces entered the half in a 0-0 draw. At the break, both teams saw five shots each on net.
Almost 20 minutes after the break, James put WMU in front after teammates Owen Smith and Roni Sylejmani found the forward for his seventh goal of the 2024 campaign. Despite the lead, The Purple Aces responded with a goal of their own in the 79th minute to tie the game at one-all.
After the conclusion of the first 90 minutes of play, the contest advanced to overtime. In the first overtime period, The Purple Aces outshot the Brown and Gold four to two, however, the Bronco defense stood strong and continued to hold Evansville scoreless.
"When you play in the postseason there has to be another level your team can elevate to, I'm not sure we can say we raised our game. Also; you look for your best players to step up and make plays in the postseason. We fell short there as well." said Wiseman.
In the second overtime period, The Purple Aces scored the golden goal in the 108th minute to eliminate WMU from the MVC Tournament.
In total, The Purple Aces outshot the Brown and Gold 19-15, including a 10-4 advantage on target.
"All and all I think the season was a great success. We replaced seven professional players from a year ago, it can be very challenging to replace the talent but even maybe more challenging to replace the personalities. I am proud of the team and the season they had." concluded Wiseman.
