Broncos Remain Undefeated in MAC with 2-0 Win Over Akron

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team pushed its record to 8-1-6 overall and 5-0-3 in the MAC with a 2-0 victory over Akron on Friday afternoon. The Broncos outshot the Zips, 36-2 in the game.

Abby Werthman was responsible for both goals in the game, while Jenna Blackburn, Jen Blitchok, Maya Dean and Sammi Glover all recorded assists. Goalkeeper Lauren Boafo made two saves and recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

FIRST HALF
Western Michigan came out aggressive on offense, getting a shot from Blackburn in the opening mintues. That led to a corner kick and a Dean look on net that was saved by Akron keeper Sara Bower. A little bit after that, Blackburn caught Bower out of her net and fired a shot on goal. The Zips were able to clear the ball off the line and keep the game tied at 0-0 in the 14th minute.

The Broncos maintained their aggressivneness on offense as the game moved the middle portion of the first half. Meredith Vance had two shots saved by Bower. However, the Brown and Gold finally broke through in the 36th minute, as Werthman headed in a great crossing pass from Blitchok.

Down the stretch of the opening 45 minutes, Drew Martin would fire two shots on net, but Bower and the Akron defense would keep it a one-goal game heading into the half.

SECOND HALF
Werthman had a pair of shots in the opening minutes of the second half, with the second one finding the back of the net. Dean flicked a header toward the net and Werthman tapped it across the line for her second goal of the game.

Following that look, Akron tried to make something happen, but Boafo was there to keep it a two-goal game. Blitchok nearly added to the Broncos' lead in the 55th minute, but Bower was there for yet another save.

In the middle part of the second 45 minutes, Brielle Gomez lifted a shot just over the bar. Moments after that, Brooke Bailey had a strong chance on net that was scooped up by Bower.

In the final 10 minutes of action, WMU got some more great chances. Laney Peterson fired one over the bar, while Emily Pagett had a tip out front saved by Bower. In the closing minutes, Blitchok and Martin had shots that missed wide of the net. The Broncos would end up closing out a 2-0 victory.
