Offense Erupts in 5-1 Win for Broncos

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For a second consecutive night, the Western Michigan offense showed up, as the Broncos took care of Ferris State, 5-1, on Saturday night at Ewigleben Arena.

WMU got two goals from Owen Michaels, while Matteo Costantini, Cam Knuble and Grant Slukynsky each chipped in one a piece. Hampton Slukynsky recorded his first career win in his first career start. He stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos came out aggressive on offense, getting shots from Alex Bump and Liam Valente in the opening two minutes of the frame. Following those looks, Ferris State tested Slukynsky. He was up to the task, making six consecutive saves to keep the game tied at 0-0 just under three minutes into the game.

About five minutes into the period, WMU went on the power play. Costantini, Tristan Lemyre, Zach Nehring and Brian Kramer all had looks on net. Kramer rang a shot off the post and Ferris State was able to clean the puck up off the line to keep the game tied.

As the period moved past the midway point, Slukynsky made another nice save on Andrew Noel. Kramer cleaned up the loose puck and pushed it up to a surging Iiro Hakkarainen. He and Michaels worked the odd-man rush to perfection, netting the games first goal with just over seven minutes to play in the period.

WMU's offense wasn't done there, however. The Broncos went on another power play late in the opening frame and capitalized on the man advantage. Bump found Costantini in the slot, and he ripped a shot by FSU goaltender Noah West to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

SECOND PERIOD
WMU picked up right where it left off, scoring in the opening minute of the second frame. Grant Slukynsky pushed a pass to Michaels right in front of the net, and he lit the lamp for the second time in the game. That pushed the Brown and Gold's lead to 3-0.

Not too long after the goal, the Broncos were sent to the box for slashing. On the penalty kill, Slukynsky made six saves to keep WMU in front by three goals. Not even a minute later, WMU went back to the box.

The Bulldogs had limited chances on net and WMU got back to full strength. The game moved under 10 minutes in the second frame and Ferris State was sent to the box. This time for high sticking. Bump and Costantini had shots blocked on the man advantage.

With under five minutes to play in the middle period, West saved a good Robby Drazner chance. Valente then hit the crossbar. As the period ticked down, the Broncos were sent to the penalty box for cross checking. Ferris State carried all but 14 seconds of the power play to the final period.

THIRD PERIOD
Drazner blocked the only FSU chance on the man advantage and WMU worked its way back to full strength. However, an interference penalty just moments later would send the Bulldogs back on the man advantage.

The Broncos would again limit the scoring chances and get back to even strength early in the third period. After some back-and-forth play throughout the middle portion of the final frame, the Western Michigan offense would heat back up.

With just under eight minutes to play in the game, Ty Henricks found Knuble skating toward the goal and hit him with a pass. He tipped it by West to push the Broncos' lead to 4-0. About two minutes later, Grant Slukynsky lit the lamp off of a pass from Nehring to make it 5-0.

Ferris State would score late in the game, but the Brown and Gold would go on to close out a 5-1 victory. On the weekend, WMU outscored FSU 9-2.
