KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team was defeated by Minnesota Duluth, 6-3, Friday night at Lawson Arena.
The Broncos got goals from
Zak Galambos,
Carter Berger and
Matteo Costantini. Costantini's point streak has now hit 11 straight games, as he's tallied three goals and 12 assists in the that stretch.
FIRST PERIOD
Duluth opened the game with a goal in the first two minutes to grab an early lead. However, just a few minutes later, the Bulldogs would commit the first penalty of the game, giving WMU the game's first look on the power play.
The Broncos would get five shots on the man advantage, but they couldn't find the equalizer. The Brown and Gold continued to apply pressure, eventually breaking through in the closing seconds of the opening frame.
After having his first shot stopped, Galambos followed his shot and snuck one by UMD goaltender Matthew Thiessen to knot the game at 1-1.
SECOND PERIOD
Early in the second 20 minutes, Western Michigan would get another look on the man advantage, with UMD getting sent off for too many men on the ice. Galambos and
Ethan Phillips would get shots on the power play, but Thiessen would keep the game tied at 1-1.
As the period moved to the later stages, the Broncos were hit with back-to-back major penalties, giving UMD a 5-on-3 for better than three minutes of action.
The Bulldogs scored with under three minutes to play in the period and carried a good portion of the two majors into the final period.
THIRD PERIOD
Western Michigan did well to kill off the remaining time of both majors, but the Bulldogs were still able to find the next goal, as Braden Fischer lit the lamp to make it a 3-1 UMD lead just under three minutes into the final frame.
Following a WMU power play, Berger was able to make some nice moves in front of the net to help the Broncos get back within one with nearly 14 minutes to play. However, just over a minute after that goal, Duluth was able to grab its two-goal lead back.
With just over seven minutes left to play in the game, Costantini used a nice pass from
Sam Colangelo to bring WMU back within one again. But UMD had another answer, scoring less than 30 seconds later.
Western Michigan would give up one more goal late in the game, and the Bulldogs would collect a 6-3 victory to open the series.
