KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened up the 2024 portion of its schedule with an emphatic 7-0 win over Ferris State at West Hills Athletic Club.
The win was first for interim head coach Jimmy Beckwith.
The Broncos earned the doubles point with wins of 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 2 and No. 3. Karin Hamilton and Audrey Smitek dispatched Parker Nolan and Maria Hernandez Ferrer at No. 2, while Polina Khotko and Ariane Souligny earned the win at No. 2 over Aimee Reynoso Cupido and Kennedy Dumas. WMU's No. 1 pairing of Lindsey Zieglar and Valleriya Monko had a 5-2 lead but their match went unfinished.
WMU swept through singles with two-set wins in four of the six matches. Zieglar earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sophie Daavettila. Monko made quick work of Morgan Waller at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2, while Hamilton earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Renoso Cupido at No. 3. Smitek was the last of the two-set winners with a 6-2, 6-4 over Ana Hernandez Ferrer. Khotko earned her first dual-match singles win as a Bronco, with a 5-7, 7-6 (10-4), 1-0 (10-7) decision over Nolan at No. 4, while freshman Julia Frazier picked up her first collegiate dual-match singles victory after defeating Maria Hernandez Ferrer at No. 6, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3).
The Broncos head on the road this weekend, traveling to Indiana University for a match at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
