Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls to Miami (OH)

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team fell to Mid-American Conference foe Miami (Ohio) Saturday. The Brown and Gold were led by Artemis Kouki and Hannah Spitzley, who combined for 23 points on the evening.

The Broncos shot off to a fast start by scoring 11 points in the contest's first four and a half minutes to take an early 11-6 advantage over the Redhawks. During the four-and-a-half minute span, Kouki would knock down one of her four made three-pointers on the night. The redshirt sophomore guard from Athens, Greece has seen an uptick in three-point volume over the past six contests: Kouki has averaged two three-pointers a game since Sunday, December 17, while shooting at a blistering 48% from deep.

Later in the second quarter, WMU was held to eight points. During the second frame, Kaiden Glenn and Nile Mugira Orbe led the Broncos on the offensive front. Glenn would convert on two layups in back-to-back possessions and found Mugira Orbe for a deep three-pointer to close out the half. WMU entered the breakdown 26-22.

The Brown and Gold exited the locker room firing on all cylinders to begin the third quarter Saturday. In the quarter's first minute, Kouki and Spitzley each made a three-pointer, which in turn gave the women's basketball a 28-26 lead. After losing control of the lead midway through the third, the Broncos stormed back and tied up the game at 33 all behind another Kouki three-pointer with 6:43 remaining. However, WMU was limited to a single three-pointer from Kaitlyn Zarycki for the remainder of the third and the Brown and Gold entered the fourth down 14 to the Redhawks.

In the fourth, the Brown and Gold would tie a team-high 14 points in the final quarter after a balanced attack from Zarycki, Spizley, Jasmine Elder, and Kouki. Later in the frame, with just over one minute remaining in the contest, Kouki would splash her fourth and final three-pointer, which tied a career high for the guard.

Tip-Ins

Tonight, guard Gabi Saxman tied Kouki and Carlson for a game high four steals. With her efforts on the defensive end, Saxman sits one steal away from 100 career swipes.
