CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After a couple of outstanding performances in games at Oakland and Michigan, Western Michigan senior forward
Abby Werthman has been selected as the Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced this morning.
This is Werthman's first MAC weekly award, and she becomes the second Bronco to claim the honor this year (
Jen Blitchok). Werthman netted her first two goals of the season and helped the Broncos collect a 1-1 record in road games against Oakland (3-0 win) and Michigan (2-3, loss) this past week. In total, she recorded two goals, four points, eight shots and four shots on goal for the week.
Against the Golden Grizzlies, Werthman extended WMU's lead to 2-0 as her shot squeaked by the keeper. She had four shots (two on goal) in the match. She followed that up with another strong effort against Michigan, as she played 73 minutes and recorded four shots (two on goal). Her goal with under 10 minutes to play pulled the Broncos within one. She made a turn just outside the box and fired a shot into the top left corner for her second goal of the week.
Werthman and the Broncos return to action on Thursday at Marquette before returning home to begin MAC play against Northern Illinois. For home games, Bronco soccer tickets can be purchased
