Calcagno, Case Double-Doubles Lift WMU to Tournament Victory

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Anna Calcagno and Logan Case both had double-doubles to help the Western Michigan volleyball team win the 2023 WMU Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 victory (26-28, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23) over Villanova on Sunday afternoon at University Arena.

FINAL SCORE: Western Michigan 3, Villanova 1
LOCATION: University Arena (Kalamazoo, Mich.)
RECORDS: Western Michigan (3-0) | Villanova (2-1)

Following the match, Logan Case was named Tournament MVP, while Keona Salesman and Andelyn Simkins also represented Western Michigan on the All-Tournament Team.

Calcagno nearly posted a triple-double for the Broncos, as she racked up 16 kills on a .344 hitting percentage, collected 10 digs and totaled a career-high nine blocks. The senior was one dig on Saturday shy of having double-doubles in all three matches of the tournament. Case registered her first double-double of the season after picking up 44 assists and 14 digs.

Western Michigan hit .321 for the afternoon, with Maggie King leading the team in kills for the second consecutive day with a match-high 19 on a blistering .500 hitting percentage. Salesman added 15 kills for the Broncos while hitting .325.

WMU had another strong effort up front, as it totaled 16 blocks for the afternoon. Amanda Glanton's career high 11 (1 solo, 10 assists) and Calcagno's nine (all assists) spearheaded the effort. Glanton's 11 total blocks marked the first double-digit block performance by a Bronco since Janell Williams had 12 against Toledo on Nov. 9, 2019. The sophomore's 11 blocks also tied for fifth-most in a four-set match in program history.

The Broncos got out to a 15-10 lead in the first set, but a Villanova run quickly shrunk the gap to 16-14. Western Michigan pushed its advantage back out to four, 23-19, before a 5-1 spurt, which included fending off three set points, by the visitors evened the frame at 24-24. The Wildcats proceeded to stave off two more set point opportunities for WMU before eventually taking the opening frame, 28-26.

Trailing 7-4 in the second set, Western Michigan rattled off four straight points to ignite a 7-1 run which gave the Brown & Gold an 11-8 advantage. At 14-11, the Broncos ripped off another five in a row to increase their lead to 19-11, and maintained firm control from there to even the match at one set apiece heading into the break.

In the third frame, another early Villanova lead was erased by a 5-0 run which put WMU ahead, 11-7. The Wildcats worked their way back to within one, 12-11, before another five-point spurt pushed the Bronco advantage out to 17-11. The margin got as small as three, 19-16, but again Western Michigan kept the visitors at arm's length to move ahead in the contest, 2-1.

With Villanova holding a 7-6 edge, WMU used an 8-2 surge to open up a 14-9 lead in the fourth frame. The Wildcats answered right back with four in a row to get within one, 14-13. After Western Michigan tallied four of the next five points to get its advantage to four, 19-15, the visitors countered with four in a row to even the set up at 19-19.

All square again at 20-20, the Broncos broke the tie with a Salesman kill and a block by Calcagno and Glanton. Villanova answered to draw level at 22-22, and following another WMU block, tied it up again at 23-23. The Brown & Gold got one more rejection from the duo of Calcagno and Glanton to bring the contest to match point, and King then hammered down her 19th kill to seal a 3-0 weekend for Western Michigan.

The Broncos begin a stretch of 11 consecutive matches away from home on Tuesday as they travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan. First serve is slated for 6 pm.
