WMU Unveils 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame Class

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan University Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and the WMU Athletics Hall of Fame Committee are honored to announce the 2023 Hall of Fame Class with Deb Albano (softball), Bill Brown (football), Danielle Brown (track & field), Danny DeKeyser (hockey), Fernando Garcia (men's tennis), Sean Mulhearn (football) and Al Scharns (men's gymnastics) set to be inducted. 

The Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will take place Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at Miller Auditorium. The Inductees will also be recognized the following afternoon at WMU's Home Coming Game against Miami. Tickets for the Hall of Fame Induction ceremony can be purchased online here. Deb Albano
Softball | Shortstop | 1982-85
Dearborn, Mich.
- Three-time First Team All-MAC selection at shortstop (1983, '84, '85)
- WMU's starting shortstop on its 1982 Women's College World Series Team
- Co-captain of 1985 MAC Tournament Championship Team
- Won MAC Regular Season Championships in 1983 and 1984
- Second Team All-Great Lakes Region selection in 1984
- Set new WMU record with 32 career doubles in 1985
 
Bill Brown
Football | 1950-53
Park Ridge, Ill.
- Excelled in football under famed head coach John Gill for four seasons
- Provided generous donations in support of WMU Football, leading to the construction of the Bill Brown Football Alumni Center.
- Also provided generous donations to the WMU Men's Basketball and Baseball programs.
- Served on the WMU Foundation Board of Directors
 
Danielle Brown
Track & Field | 2006-09
Kalamazoo, Mich.
- Three-time MAC Champion in the 400-meter hurdles
- Five-time MAC Champion as part of the 4x400-meter Relay Team
- Five-time First Team All-MAC selection
- Earned USTFCCA All-American Honors after finishing 7th in the 400 hurdles at the 2008 Outdoor NCAA Championship.
- Led WMU in points at the 2008 and 2009 MAC Championships
- Holds WMU records in the 400 Hurdles and 100 hurdles and as a part of the Indoor and Outdoor 4x100-meter relay teams.
 
Danny DeKeyser
Hockey | Defenseman | 2010-13
Detroit, Mich.
- Two-time All-CCHA selection, earning a Second Team selection in 2012 and First Team in 2013.
- Helped WMU to the 2012 CCHA Tournament Championship, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
- Twice named CCHA Defensive Defenseman of the Year (2012, '13)
- Helped lead WMU to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2012.
- Two-time American Hockey Coaches Association CCM West Second Team All-American (2012, '13).
- Went on to play 11 seasons in the National Hockey League.
 
Fernando Garcia
Men's Tennis | 1998-2001

Cali, Colombia
- Three-time First Team All-MAC selection
- 2001 MAC Player of the Year
- 1998 MAC Newcomer of the Year
- Helped WMU to MAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships in 1999 and 2001.
- Tied for program record for singles wins in a season (34).
- 2001 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection
- Three-time Academic All-MAC selection.
 
Sean Mulhearn
Football | Linebacker | 1987-90
Hesperia, Mich.
- 1990 MAC Defensive Player of the Year
- First Team All-MAC selection in 1990
- Team captain for 1990 team
- Ranks second all-time in career tackles with 435
- Tied for program record for most fumbles recovered in a season with 5.
- Helped WMU to a MAC Championship in 1988 and trip to the California Bowl.
- Selected as a member of the WMU Football All-Century Team.
 
Al Scharns
Men's Gymnastics | 1980-85

Baden, Pa.
- Three-time Co-Captain
- Broke WMU All-Around record three times and hold Still Rings record
- First freshmen in program history to break 50.00 in All-Around.
- Three-time Great Lakes Conference Gymnast of the Year
- Won Great Lakes Conference Individual Championships in the Still Rings (1982, '85), Horizontal Bar (1982, '85), All-Around (1982, '85), and Parallel Bar (1984).
- Member of 1981 and 1985 WMU Great Lakes Conference Championship teams.
- Represented the United States in South Africa in 1984.
