Track and Field Completes Competition at Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Western Michigan track and field team produced some strong results at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State, this weekend. The weekend was highlighted by Katelyn Spooner moving into fourth all-time in program history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She finished with a time of 10:57.75. That was good for second place in the event.

Anichka Malachi kicked off Friday's action by finishing 11th in the long jump. She recorded a mark of 5.39 meters. Claira Gilchrist followed that up by claiming 12th in the 400-meter hurdles, as she crossed the finish line in a time of 1:04.13.

To conclude Friday's action, Maggie Raab was able to place 35th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:55.09. To open Saturday's action, Tess Van Dyk finished 20th in the shot put, earning a throw of 12.82 meters. She followed that up by finishing 24th in the discus, registering a mark of 37.54 meters.

Raab was solid in the 800-meter run, collecting 15th place with a time of 2:17.38. Grace Johnson then followed that up by finishing fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. She crossed the finish line in a time of 14.02.

The Broncos will travel to Louisville's Clark Wood Open next weekend in what will be their final regular season meet of the outdoor season. The MAC Championships will take place on May 11-13 in Akron, Ohio.

CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"We did a good job managing ourselves in the weather this weekend. Grace had an excellent prelim that shows us we are in a good spot as we head into the postseason. Maggie bounced back from a mediocre 1500 to get within a second of her PR in the 800, which speaks volumes of her mindset. Concluding the meet, Spooner came out with a big PR in the Steeplechase by 15 seconds to get runner up and even moved up to number four in school history. We've got one more regular season meet ahead and we will look to fine tune some things before we head into the conference meet."
