KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team rebounded and picked up 6-1 over Northern Illinois at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
WMU (11-6, 2-3 MAC) started off strong, winning the doubles point. Lindsey Zieglar and Valeriya Monko earned a quick 6-0 win over Erika Dimitriev and Natly Ninova to give the Broncos the advantage. Karin Hamilton and Audrey Smitek battled back to pick up a win at No. 3, 6-4, over Isabella Righi and McKenna Chudy to secure the doubles point.
Zieglar pushed WMU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Dimitriev. Freshman Ariane Souligny picked up her 13th dual-match win after taking down Righi 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5, making it 3-0. Maya Perkucin secured the team victory after a 7-5, 6-4 win. Smitek pushed the lead to 5-0 with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win over Angelica Ross at No. 6, while Monko picked up WMU's sixth and final point with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3.
The Broncos keep their homestand rolling next Friday against Ball State at 1 p.m.
