OXFORD, Ohio – Western Michigan redshirt junior right-hander
Brady Miller fired seven scoreless innings to help lead the Broncos to a 6-0 victory over Miami on Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the two teams' three-game Mid-American Conference weekend series. The shutout was the first of the season for WMU.
FINAL SCORE: Western Michigan 6, Miami 0
LOCATION: McKie Field at Hayden Park (Oxford, Ohio)
RECORDS: Western Michigan (6-17, 3-4 MAC) | Miami (6-21, 3-7)
W: Brady Miller (2-3)
| L: Connor Oliver (1-4)
Miller limited the Miami offense to five hits over his seven scoreless frames and piled up a new career-high 10 strikeouts. After stranding a baserunner in each of the first two innings, the right-hander got into a groove, retiring seven in a row at one point, including striking out the side in the fourth.
The RedHawks got a leadoff double to start the fifth, but Miller picked the runner off, with
Jimmy Allen ducking in from behind to apply the tag. With a runner at second base and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Miller ended the threat with his 10th strikeout of the afternoon.
Western Michigan supported Miller with a balanced attack, as eight of the nine Broncos who came to the plate picked up at least one hit.
Cade Sullivan led the way with a 3-for-5 day, which included his team-leading seventh home run of the season, and four RBIs.
It was Sullivan who got WMU the lead in the top of the first, as the junior delivered a two-out RBI single to bring
Will Morrison home.
The Broncos tacked on three more in the third. Morrison plated
Jackson Kitchen with a double, Sullivan knocked in Morrison with a single, and Sullivan then scored on a Miami error.
The score remained 4-0 in favor of WMU until the eighth, when Sullivan blasted a two-run homer to right center, extending the margin to 6-0.
Following his seven scoreless frames, Miller gave way to
Hayden Berg, who completed the shutout by keeping the RedHawks off of the scoreboard over the final two innings. Berg notched three strikeouts in his two innings of work. The 13 combined strikeouts were the most by the Bronco staff so far in 2023.
Western Michigan and Miami conclude their three-game weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one of the twin bill is scheduled for 12 pm.
