BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team suffered its first Mid-American Conference loss of the season, falling 4-3 at Buffalo on Friday.
The doubles point went down to the wire. The Bulls took the early advantage with a 6-0 win at No. 3 before Peter Kuszynski and Ferdinand Schlueter tied it up with a 6-4 win at No. 1. The point came down to the No. 2 battle of Anton Arzhankin and Arjun Honnappa against Daniils Snaiders and Aleksandr Kalinin. The match went to a tie-breaker, with the Bulls prevailing 11-9 for the 7-6 win.
WMU took the lead after wins by Kuszynski at No. 3 over Cheng Teng 6-4, 6-4, and Fynn Lohse over Snaiders at No. 6 6-3, 6-4. Simon Wibler tied the match at 2-2 after besting George at No. 2 7-5, 7-5. Arzhankin earned a 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) win at No. 1 over Kalinin to give WMU the lead back. Theodoros Mitsakos squared the match at 3-3 after defeating Jackson Boone 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 5. The match point came down No. 4. Finn Macnamara won the first set, 6-3, but Honappa claimed the second set with the same score. Honnappa had a lead in the third set but couldn't hold off Macnamara, who came back to win 7-5.
The Broncos head to Ithaca to take on No. 29 Cornell on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then head to Binghamton to resume MAC play on Sunday at 11 a.m.
