INTO THE UNKNOWN
The 26th-ranked Western Michigan gymnastics team is set to compete in the second round of the NCAA Regional Championships on Friday at 2 p.m. against No. 7 California, No. 10 Michigan State and No. 29 West Virginia.Â
The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.
This is the third-straight season the Broncos have earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament, but the first time they have by-passed the play-in round. Last season the Broncos fell to Iowa State at Auburn, 193.575-195.750. In 2021, Western Michigan competed against N.C. State at the University of Georgia and fell to the Wolfpack 195.075-196.425.
EVERYTHING'S BROKEN
Western Michigan's unprecedented season has resulted in a lot of broken records.Â
- The team meet score record fell twice. First against Central Michigan on Feb. 19 with a score of 196.750. The second time came against Northern Illinois with a score of 197.100.Â
- The team uneven bars record was snapped at George Washington on Feb. 24. The score of 49.325 broke the previous record of 49.250 set all the way back on March 4, 2000 against Temple.Â
- The team floor record was bested against Eastern Michigan on Feb. 12 with a score of 49.525.
- The beam record was broken against Northern Illinois with a score of 49.375.
- The team vault record was also snapped against the Huskies with a score of 49.250.Â
- Senior
Payton Murphy broke her own all-around record three times during the season, with the most recent record of 39.550 coming against NIU. Murphy also tied the program floor record with a 9.975 against Eastern Michigan, matching Cherisse Marier's mark set back on Feb. 29, 2004 against UIC.Â
- Sophomore
Cassie St. Clair tied the program vault record with a 9.925 against NIU, becoming the fourth Bronco to reach that score.Â
TWICE IS NICE
Senior
Payton Murphy repeated as the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Year. Murphy became the first Bronco in program history to win the award twice. It was just the fifth time in program history that a Bronco has been honored with the award. Murphy was also named First Team All-MAC and named to the MAC All-Tournament Team after finishing as co-champion on floor.Â
