OXFORD, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's tennis team dropped a tight match at Miami, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.
The RedHawks won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 1. Emilia Valentinsson and Sara Zalukar blanked Kaitlyn Rogosch and Ariane Souligny, 6-0, to take the early advantage. MU clinched the point with a win at No. 1 by Catherine Slowek and Laura Rico, 6-1, over WMU's Lindsey Zieglar and Valeriya Monko.
The Broncos responded with wins at No. 6 and No. 5 in singles to take a 2-1 lead. Audrey Smitek made quick work of Maya Ushio at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3, to tie it up at 1-1. Souligny gave Western Michigan the lead with a win at No. 5 over Jutte Van Hansewyck 6-4, 6-4. The RedHawks tied it up at 2-2 with Zalukar defeating Maya Perkucin 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4, before a win by Rico at No. 1 over Karin Hamilton 6-4, 6-0 gave them back the lead. Zieglar tied the match up at 3-3 with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Catherine Slowek but Valentinsson bested Monko at No. 3 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to seal the match for Miami.
WMU finally returns home for its MAC home-opener on Friday at 1 p.m. against Eastern Michigan. The Broncos also welcome Northern Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m.
