DEKALB, Ill. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team remained the lone undefeated team in the Mid-American Conference, coming from behind on to road to defeat Northern Illinois 4-3 on Saturday.
The Broncos dropped the doubles point for the third straight match after losses at No. 1 and No. 2. Mikael Vollbach and Cheng En Tsai defeated Peter Kuszynski and Ferdinand Schlueter, 6-4, to give the Huskies the advantage. They sealed the point with a win by Armin Koschtojan and Oliver Valentinsson over Arjun Honnappa and Anton Arzhankin.
Vollbach gave NIU a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 3 over Kuszynski 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Arzhankin got the Broncos on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 over En Tsai. Western Michigan tied it up at 2-2 with Benjamin George defeating Valentinsson at No. 1 7-5, 6-2. George's win snapped a two-match losing streak. Northern Illinois retook the lead with a win by Iker Gaztambide Arrastia at No. 4 over Honnappa 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The match came down to the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, which both started after the score was 3-2 NIU due to its four-court facility. Jackson Boone dispatched Armin Koschtojan 6-4, 6-3 to tie up the match at 3-3 with a win at No. 5, leaving it all down to Fynn Lohse and NIU's Christopher Norlin. Norlin took the first set, 6-3, but Lohse responded to tie it up with a 6-4 win in set two. Lohse took the final set, 6-3, to give the Broncos the match win, improving to 5-0 in MAC play.
Western Michigan's road swing continues with three matches in New York next week. The Broncos open against Binghamton on Friday, travel to Cornell on Saturday and then close things out against Buffalo on Sunday.
