KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play after downing Buffalo, 5-2, at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (6-6, 2-0 MAC) jumped out ahead after earning the doubles point. Fynn Lohse and Anton Arzhankin picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Cheng Tang and Aleksandr Kalinin. Benjamin George and Brogan Pierce secured the point with a win at No. 3 over Daniils Snaiders and Greg Hastings. Ferdinand Schlueter and Peter Kuszynski were leading at No. 1, 6-5, but their match went unfinished.
Senior Arjun Honnappa pushed the lead to 2-0 after winning at No. 4 over Theodoros Mitsakos 6-3, 6-3. Kalinin earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over George at No. 1 to put the Bulls on the board. Kuszynski ut the Broncos back up by two after a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) victory at No. 3 over Simon Wibler before junior Jackson Boone sealed the match win at No. 6. Boone trailed early in his first set against Snaiders, but battled back to win 7-6 (7-5). He then made quick work of Snaiders in the second set with a 6-2 victory. Sophomore Anton Arzhankin won the final point for WMU with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) finish over Tang at No. 2.
The Broncos head on the road to continue MAC play, traveling to Ball State on Friday and Toledo on Sunday.
