KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team was upended by Colorado College Saturday night inside Lawson Arena. The Broncos forced overtime midway through the third period, but ultimately fell in the extra session, 3-2.
Ryan McAllister scored the game's first goal, getting assists from
Max Sasson and
Cedric Fiedler. Sasson then went on to score the game-tying goal in the third period, getting helpers from McAllister and
Zak Galambos.
Cameron Rowe made 28 saves in the game.
It was a fast-paced game to begin the opening 20 minutes, with both teams getting great looks on net.
Jason Polin and
Aidan Fulp had the best looks for WMU early on. Eventually, Western Michigan was able to find the back of the net, with McAllister sniping Kaidan Mbereko midway through the first frame. However, just 14 seconds later, Colorado College was able to knot the game at 1-1, with Noah Serdachny lighting the lamp.
From there, neither team would find any offense down the stretch. Polin,
Cole Gallant and
Tim Washe threw shots on net that Mbereko was able to keep out of the net. WMU held the Tigers without a shot for the final five minutes of the first period.
Tied at 1-1, Colorado College got the first three chances of the second frame, but Rowe was able to slam the door on those looks. The Tigers kept up the offensive attack and eventually found the go-ahead goal, as Noah Laba beat Rowe to put the Tigers up 2-1 just over seven minutes into the second 20 minutes. Assists went to Hunter McKown and Ethan Straky. WMU was then able to go on the power play, with Connor Mayer sent off for tripping.
Dylan Wendt had the only look for WMU in that two-minute man advantage. The Tigers carried that one-goal advantage into the third period.
Trailing by one, Western Michigan began to create offensive opportunities early in the third frame. Just over five minutes into the third period, Fulp had two shots saved, while Sasson and
Daniel Hilsendager were also stopped by Mbereko. However, the Broncos were rewarded for their persistence, as Sasson cleaned up a loose puck to tie the game at 2-2 with about 9:30 to play in the third period. The pressure ramped up, as both teams looked for the game-winning goal, but neither would find it in the third frame. Overtime was needed to settle the contest.
It was all Broncos early in the overtime session, with WMU getting the first three shots. However, just over three minutes into the first overtime, Colorado College threw a puck on net that found its way to Matthew Gleason, who buried the game-winning goal to send the Tigers to the Frozen Faceoff next weekend.
Western Michigan will now await its NCAA Tournament fate, with the 16-team field being announced on March 19. A berth in the tournament would mark the second-straight season the Broncos have played in the NCAA Tournament.
