KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season after downing Binghamton, 7-0, at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.
The Broncos picked up the doubles point after taking two of the three matches to start. Peter Kuszynski and Ferdinand Schlueter won 6-2 at No. 1 over Michael Pawlowicz and James McPherson to give the WMU the early advantage. Kyle Weekes and Ronin Lotlikar earned a 6-1 win at No. 3 over WMU's Benjamin George and Brogan Pierce to tie things up at 1-1. However, minutes later Fynn Lohse and Anton Arzhankin secured the point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over William Morais Binnie and Andrew Fang.
WMU won five of the six matches in two sets to complete the sweep. Senior Arjun Honnappa made quick work of Dan Pegel at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win to push the lead to 2-0. Kuszynski picked up a win at No. 3, 6-2, 7-5, over Lotlikar to get the Broncos within a point of victory. George sealed the win after a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Pawlowicz. Pierce and Arzhankin both added wins of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 and No. 2 before Jackson Boone finished off the sweep with a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win at No. 6 over McPherson.
Western Michigan continues conference play on Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting Buffalo at West Hills Athletic Club. Admission is free.
