Norman Reaches 1,000-Point Mark at Miami

OXFORD, Ohio – Senior guard Lamar Norman Jr. became the 45th player in Western Michigan program history to surpass 1,000 career points in an 85-78 road loss to Miami on Tuesday evening at Millett Hall.

Norman was one of three Broncos to score in double-figures, as the Grand Rapids, Mich., native tallied 12 points for the evening. The senior is the first player to reach 1,000 career points at Western Michigan since both Michael Flowers and Brandon Johnson reached the milestone during the 2019-20 campaign.

Freshman Seth Hubbard led Western Michigan (6-18, 2-9 MAC) in scoring for the evening with a career-high 20 points off of the bench. Hubbard is the fourth different Bronco to have a 20+ point game off of the bench this season.

Titus Wright came just shy of a double-double, as he tallied 17 points and nine rebounds. Markeese Hastings hovered near a double-double as well, as he posted nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

A 12-3 run helped Miami (8-16, 2-9) seize a 15-7 edge at the 14:35 mark of the first half. The RedHawks' lead briefly climbed to 21-12, but Western Michigan tallied the next five points to bring the margin to four, 21-17, just past the halfway mark of the period.

WMU got to within four of the RedHawks on multiple occasions, but an 8-2 stretch allowed Miami to extend the cushion into double-digits for the first time, 37-27, with 4:20 on the clock. With MU on top 39-29, Hubbard hit a trio of three-pointers to key an 11-2 run which got the Broncos to within one, 41-40. The RedHawks took a 43-40 edge into the halftime locker room.

Miami's lead stayed between three and seven until a 10-1 stretch helped the hosts build their cushion to 12, 61-49, with nine minutes remaining. MU grabbed its largest advantage of the evening, 64-51, at the 7:35 mark.

WMU mounted a late charge in the final minutes, using a 10-3 run to get back to within five, 76-71, with one minute to play. The Broncos could draw no closer, however, as Miami closed out the game by making nine-of-10 from the foul line in the last minute.

The Broncos hit an even 50.0 percent (31-of-62) of their field goals for the evening, while Miami connected on 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the floor. Led by Hubbard's 20 points, Western Michigan held a 37-15 advantage in bench points.

Western Michigan is on the road again on Saturday afternoon as it visits NIU. The Broncos and Huskies are slated for a 4 pm start on ESPN3.

WMU returns to University Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 14, for a rematch against Kent State. Game time is set for 7 pm. To purchase tickets to any Western Michigan men's basketball home game this season, visit wmubroncos.com/tickets.
