SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After some strong performances on the opening day of the meet, the Western Michigan track and field team continued to find success on the final day of the Meyo Invitational earlier today.
Anichka Malachi led things off with a 10th-place finish in the triple jump. She was able to post a mark of 11.91 meters. That is a top-15 mark in the Mid-American Conference this season.
In the one-mile run,
Annalise James and
Katelyn Spooner had strong outings, finishing 15th and 19th, respectively. The field consisted of more than 45 runners. James finished in a time of 4:57.93, while Spooner crossed the finish line in a time of 5:00.66.
Next up was a pair of hurdlers in
Grace Johnson and
Ahvon Mitchell. That duo competed in the 60-meter hurdles, where Mitchell took ninth in the prelims with a time of 8.68 and Johnson placed 11th with a time of 8.78.
To end the meet,
Makayla Perez finished eighth in the 3,000-meter run after recording a time of 9:30.79. She was less than a second from seventh place and nearly two seconds ahead of the ninth-place finisher.
The Broncos will be back in action next weekend at the GVSU Big Meet. That is the last regular season indoor meet before the MAC Championships.
CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"I thought we did well," head coach Kevin Cataldo said. "That was by far the most competitive meet that we've had so far this season, and we did a good job of managing ourselves. Ahvon got the group started with a PR in the 60-meter hurdles yesterday. That was followed up by a few more personal bests from Annalise, Katelyn and Makayla. We are setting ourselves up well for our final regular season meet next week."
