KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team picked up its second win of the season in a 7-0 sweep of Oakland at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.
The Broncos (2-2) started off the match like they have done in every match so far this spring, winning the doubles point.
Karin Hamilton and
Audrey Smitek gave WMU the advantage after a 6-1 win at No. 3 over Isabelle Popma and Tegan Heaton. Lindsey Ziegler and
Valeriya Monko then sealed the point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 over Yasmin Glazbrook and Nirva Patel. Zieglar and Monko improved to 4-0 as a doubles pair so far this season.
Junior
Maya Perkucin extended WMU's lead to 2-0 to open singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Glazbrook at No. 3. Freshman
Ariane Souligny pushed the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Popma. Zieglar sealed the match win with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Liza Mladentseva. Smitek, Hamilton and Monko all also earned two-set wins to finish off the sweep.
The Broncos are back at it again on Saturday at West Hills Athletic Club, hosting Illinois-Chicago at 12 p.m.
