BOSTON, Mass./ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team split up this weekend for a pair of meets at Grand Valley State and Boston University. The squad concluded competition in Boston but will be back in action at Grand Valley State tomorrow morning.
Participating in Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational,
Katelyn Spooner,
Annalise James and
Makayla Perez were solid in their events. Perez competed in the 5,000-meter run, where she finished 25th with a school record time of 16:03.59. She shattered the previous program record of 16:23.94, which she also owned.
In a field of nearly 300 runners, James and Spooner were in the top half of the 3,000-meter run. James finished 109th with a time of 9:44.43, while Spooner claimed 133rd with a time of 9:52.06. James' time is good for seventh in program history.
At the GVSU Big Meet,
Anichka Malachi was in action throughout the day, competing in the long jump and triple jump. In the triple jump, Malachi finished first by earning a mark of 11.90 meters. That was nearly .30 meters better than the next highest finisher. Malachi was also terrific in the long jump, earning a mark of 5.44 meters. That was good for second place and just .04 meters behind the first-place finisher.
Ahvon Mitchell was strong in the 60-meter hurdles, collecting fourth with a time of 8.55. That mark is tied for the second best indoor 60-meter hurdles time in program history and just .03 seconds behind the program record.
In the 5,000-meter run,
Brooke Soper finished eighth in her heat, notching a time of 18:05.65. Also racing in the event was
Lauren Sancrant. She finished 30th in her heat with a time of 19:19.58.
