Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Win Streak Snapped Wednesday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. The Western Michigan women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak come to a close Wednesday evening after a 62-59 defeat to the Detroit Titans. Kaitlyn Zarycki and Maggie Stutelburg led the Broncos with 16 points each on a combined 47.8% shooting display from the field.

The Brown and Gold were limited to five first-quarter points on Wednesday. During the first frame, Kaiden Glenn led Western Michigan with all five of the team's points.

In the second quarter, the Broncos bounced back on the offensive end of the court by doubling up their previous quarter with 11 points. During the second quarter of play Artemis Kouki, Zarycki, Hannah Spitzley, and Gabi Saxman combined for the team's 11 points. At the half, WMU trialed the Titans 31-16.

After the break, the Brown and Gold exploded offensively and outscored the Titans in the second half 43-31 after shooting a blistering 65.2% during the last 20 minutes of regulation. In the beginning minutes of the third quarter, the women's basketball team found themselves down 18. The Broncos responded with urgency and recorded a 9-2 run after a group effort by Zarycki, Stutelburg, and Glenn, to pull the Broncos within nine, with 2:59 remaining in the third. After exchanging buckets during the final three minutes, the Brown and Gold entered the fourth quarter with a 10-point deficit.

Tailing 43-31 to begin the fourth, Spitzley made two layups expeditiously in part of her personal seven-point barrage during the course of two minutes, to bring the Broncos within eight points at 46-38 with 6:55 remaining. Later in the quarter with 4:20 to go, Stutelberg fed off of Spitzley's energy and compiled three buckets from long range in over two and a half minutes to pull the Broncos within two points. Stutelberg was able to make the score 52-50 with 2:58 remaining off an assist from Denali Craig-Edwards, however, Detroit Mercy began to pull away. Zarycki and Ali Carlson would score nine points for the Broncos during the last three minutes and would bring the Broncos within one point, twice in the game's last 17 seconds. However, for every bucket the duo collected the Titans would always have a counter.

Maggie Stutelberg Three Point Tracker

After Stutelberg's 4-8 performance this evening, she needs 16 more three pointers to tie Sarah Hurrle (2000-01) and enter inside the top 21 in career three pointers made in program history. Stutelberg sits at 60 three pointers on her career (27 this season). Last year, Stutelberg made 33 threes in 29 contests for the Brown and Gold.
