Women’s Hoops Drops Thursday’s Contest At #14 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind.. --The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped its non-conference tilt against 14th nationally ranked Notre Dame 84-47 Thursday evening.
Kaitlyn Zarycki led the Brown and Gold with 16 points and two blocks after shooting 7-16 from the field.

The Brown and Gold exploded to a fast start in South Bend Thursday and led the Fighting Irish 7-2 after the first 2:10 of the first quarter. Zarycki, Alli Carlson, and Artemis Kouki would score during the Broncos' first three of four possessions to claim their largest lead of the game. Over the first quarter's final 7:50, the Brown and Gold would combine for six points. After falling behind 17-11, Zarycki was able to stop the Notre Dame scoring run by laying in a transition bucket to cut the deficit to four with 3:34 remaining in the first. However, WMU would find themselves in an 11-point deficit in South Bend after the first 10 minutes of Thursday's contest.

In the second quarter, the Brown and Gold tightened up their defensive grip over the Irish and allowed a quarter-low 17 points in the process. During the second quarter, Zarycki, Hannah Spitzley, and Jasmine Elder each had one block apiece to lead WMU on the defensive end of the floor. The women's basketball team was able to cut their deficit to single digits on two instances after a layup from Zarycki and a jumper from Elder. However, Notre Dame closed the final 5:19 of the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 17-point lead into the break.

At the start of the third quarter, Zarycki and Elder were able to contain the Notre Dame lead under 20. However, during the final seven and a half minutes, the Irish collected a 20-11 run to close out the third with a 66-37 lead. Later during the fourth quarter, Kouki drained two three-pointers for the Broncos, while Zarycki and Nile Muguira Obre added two points each for WMU.

After being held scoreless in her Bronco debut on November 6, against Depaul, Zarycki has produced nine straight double-digit scoring games. Of the nine contests, Zarycki has scored at least 16 points in seven games, including a 32-point performance against Valparaiso on Wednesday, November 29, at University Arena.
