Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hubbard, Brown Eclipse 20-Point Mark at CSU

CLEVELAND – Seth Hubbard tallied 23 points and Javonte Brown notched a career-high 21 points as the Western Michigan men's basketball team fell at Cleveland State, 90-77, on Thursday evening.

Hubbard led the Broncos (2-9) in scoring for the fifth time this season with 23 points, just shy of his career high. Brown's 21 points eclipsed the career high of 15 he established on Saturday in his Western Michigan debut. Owen Lobsinger was in double-figures as well, as the junior registered 14 points and tied a career high with 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro filled up the stat sheet with eight points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds.

Cleveland State (8-5) got out to a quick start as it grabbed a 9-2 edge in the opening minutes. At 17-11, the Vikings used a 12-2 stretch to extend the margin to 29-13 as the contest reached the midway point of the first half. Western Michigan countered with a 9-2 run of its own to close the gap to 35-28 at the 4:31 mark, but CSU pushed its advantage back into double-figures just before the break, and took a 46-34 lead into the locker room.

With the margin at 52-38, the Broncos rattled off eight consecutive points, with five from Hubbard and an old-fashioned three-point play by Brown, to close the gap to 52-46 with 13:48 remaining. The Vikings came right down and answered with a five-point possession to restore their double-digit cushion, 57-46. From there, WMU could not get any closer than eight for the remainder of the evening.

Western Michigan went 26-for-59 (44.1 percent) from the floor in the contest, while Cleveland State knocked down 33-of-76 (43.4 percent) of its field goal attempts. The Brown and Gold enjoyed a 42-38 edge on the glass.

The Broncos return to University Arena on Friday, Dec., 29, to take on Aquinas at 4 pm. For tickets to any home WMU men's basketball game this season, visit wmubroncos.com/tickets.
