Charlie Sharp Named Finalist For MAC Hermann Trophy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches in partnership with the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced on Wednesday the men's finalists for the 2023 MAC Hermann Trophy, as the NCAA Division I National Player of the Year. Today, Western Michigan men's soccer forward Charlie Sharp was named one of three finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy.

Today, Sharp became the first MAC Hermann Trophy finalist in WMU men's soccer program history after his record breaking year for the Brown and Gold. During the 2023 campaign, Sharp scored 19 goals, had eight assists and posted seven game winning goals to lead the Broncos to a 17-1-4 record and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to national runner-up Notre Dame on penalty kicks.

Sharp had a fantastic run in the final half of the 2023 campaign, scoring or assisting in nine of his last 10 matches for the Brown and Gold. During the 10 game span, the forward averaged 1.2 goals, 0.7 assists, and 3.1 points per game. At the conclusion of the 2023 season, the forward from Brighton, Michigan, ranked first in the NCAA with 0.95 goals per game, 2.30 points per game, and was tied for second with seven game winning goals.

Sharp concluded his career at WMU with 42 goals, 22 assists, and 106 points in 89 games played. Sharp will leave Western ranked first in career goals and tied for fourth with teammate Dylan Sing with 22 assists. Sharp is also tied with Sing for first in program history with 89 caps for the Brown and Gold.

The finalists were determined by voting by the Division I men's coaches. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most coveted individual honor in college soccer, awarded annually since 1967 for men and 1988 for women. This year's winner will be announced in a press conference on January 5, 2024, at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by a banquet honoring all this year's finalists for both women and men.
