Women’s Basketball’s Rally Falls Short In Loss To Campbell

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped its first contest of the weekend against Campbell University 70-61 Friday evening. The Brown and Gold were led by Hannah Spitzley, Maggie Stutelberg, and Kaitlyn Zarycki in the scoring department. The trio combined for 40 of WMU's 61 points in the contest.

After both teams exchanged the lead in the first quarter of play, Campbell slowly crept away with a five point advantage after limiting the Brown and Gold to two points during the last 3:21 of the first quarter. Later on in the second, the Broncos would trail by as many as six points in the quarter Friday. Despite the deficit, after falling behind 25-19, the Brown and Gold captured a 9-2 scoring run over the final 2:42 of the half to lead by one at the break 32-31.

Tonight, Stutelberg was key to many of the Brown and Gold's scoring runs: The redshirt sophomore paced the Brown and Gold with a season-high 17 points off a blistering 5-5 performance from long range. This evening marked the second time this season that Stutelberg would knock down five three pointers in a single game.

In the third, Stutelberg drained one of her five three pointers to pull the Broncos within one at 36-35 with 8:25 remaining in the quarter. Campbell would respond to WMU's threat and jumped out to a 10 point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Broncos would not let their foot off the gas and continued to attack the Camels defense. Over the next few minutes an 8-2 run capped off by Zarycki's and-one conversion brought the women's basketball team within four points with just under eight minutes to play. Later in the quarter, Spitzley, Stutelberg would drain buckets to claw back within five with four and a half to go Friday. Spitzley would cap off the run by knocking down a transition three to bring the Broncos within two at 60-58 with 3:35 remaining

Overall, Sptizley added 10 points for the Broncos and scored in double figures for the second straight game Friday evening. All 10 of Spitzley's points would come in the second half.

For the third consecutive contest, Zarycki scored in double figures for WMU. Tonight, the guard from Niles, Michigan, tallied 13 points and added a career-best four assists at the division one level.

Historical Notes: Stutelberg's five made three pointers is tied for the fifth most threes in a single game for the Brown and Gold. Stutelberg's career high for three pointers made is six, in which she set last season against the University of Michigan on November 26, 2023.

Up Next: The Brown and Gold will conclude play in Puerto Rico against UNC Asheville Saturday, November 25, at 4:00 PM.
