NICEVILLE, Fla. – Western Michigan sophomore guard
Seth Hubbard hit the game-winning shot with 4.5 seconds remaining to lift the Broncos to a 68-67 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Emerald Coast Classic.
Trailing by four, 65-51, with the clock under two minutes,
JaVaughn Hannah connected on a three-pointer to bring the Broncos (1-4) to within one, 65-64. With 30 seconds to play,
Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro made a pair of free throws to put Western Michigan up by a point, 66-65. Southeastern Louisiana (1-4) answered on the other end to wrestle the lead back, 67-66. After a timeout, WMU got the ball in to Hubbard, who dribbled over to the right side, pulled up just outside of the paint and banked in the winner. SLU had an attempt to win it at the buzzer, but the shot rolled off the rim.
The Western Michigan offense registered a season-high 17 assists, leading to its highest percentages of the season from the field (49.0, 25-of-51) and from downtown (50.0, 13-of-26). WMU's 13 three-pointers established a new season high. Hubbard led all scorers with 18 points, and was joined in double-figures by
Owen Lobsinger, who had 14, and
Brandon Muntu, who tallied a career-high 11.
Titus Wright and Lobsinger led the Brown and Gold on the glass with eight rebounds apiece. Wright also paced WMU with a career-high four assists.
Defensively, the Broncos limited Southeastern Louisiana to 40.3 percent shooting (25-of-62) and 31.0 percent (9-of-29) from three-point range.
The Lions got out to an early lead, opening up a 12-6 edge in the opening eight minutes of the contest. Western Michigan responded with an 11-2 run, punctuated by a Wright three-point play, to move ahead, 20-16, with just over eight minutes to go until halftime. SLU got as close as two near the end of the half, but the Broncos scored eight unanswered points in the final minute to close out the period and take a 34-24 advantage into the locker room.
Western Michigan continued to add to its cushion in the early stages of the second half, using a 10-2 stretch to extend the margin to 47-29 less than four minutes into the period. Southeastern Louisiana countered with 12 consecutive points to shrink the gap to 47-41 at the 12:33 mark. The Lions then put together a 16-5 surge to move back in front, 59-55, with under six minutes to play. SLU remained ahead until WMU's game-ending 12-5 run, which culminated in Hubbard's game winner.
The Broncos close out the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday afternoon as they take on Mercer. Tip is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
