Women’s Basketball Set to Tangle With Campbell And UNC Asheville In Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The Western Michigan women's basketball team is slated to play Campbell University on Friday, November 24, at 6:30 PM ET and UNC Asheville on Saturday, November 25, at 4:00 PM ET in this year's Puerto Rico Sports Tour. The Broncos are one of 10 schools participating in this year's tour. Games will be streamed here and score updates are available here.  

The Broncos first opponent, Campbell University, follows up on a 16-15 record last season. The Camels are led by Christabel Ezumah and Britany Staves who have combined for an average of 25.7 points per game this season. The Camels enter the Tour with a 3-1 record after wins over NC Wesleyan, Coppin State, and West Carolina.

As for the Brown and Gold's second opponent UNC Asheville, the two teams will square off for the second time ever on Saturday. The two schools met previously on December 29, 2009, where the Brown and Gold defeated the Bulldogs 64-53.  This season, Asheville enters play in Puerto Rico with a 2-2 record and is led by three double digit scorers: Redshirt senior guard McKinley Brooks-Sumpter (13.5 PPG), junior guard Lalmani Simmons (10.3 PPG), and sophomore guard Jalia Lee (10 PPG) combine for over half of the teams scoring, averaging 33.8 points per game as a trio. The Bulldogs are beginning the 2024 campaign following up on a 12-19 season last year. 

Western Michigan Begins play in Puerto Rico following up on a 54-52 win over Youngstown State on Thursday, November 16, after Megan Wagner's game winning free throws in the contests final seconds. Through three games this season, guards Kaitlyn Zarycki and Hannah Spitzley pace the Broncos in the scoring department, combining for an average of 23.7 points per game during the teams first three contests. On the boards, Zarycki leads the team with 5.7 rebounds on the season. She also is averaging a team best two steals per game. In the assist department, Alli Carlson leads all Broncos with 12 assists, while Wagner boasts an assist to turnover ratio of five to one on the year which is tied for 14th in division one women's basketball. 

Tomorrow, Wagner, Zarycki, Spitzley, Carlson, and the rest of the Brown and Gold will look to capture their first winning streak of the season with a win over the Camels.
