Zieglar Goes Undefeated in Singles as WMU Wraps up Bronco Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up its Fall season after hosting the Bronco Super Challenge over the weekend at West Hills Athletic Club.

WMU hosted Chicago State, Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan and Oakland; playing three rounds of doubles and three rounds of singles in a round-robin format.

FRIDAY RECAP
In the opening round of doubles action, the Broncos picked up three wins. Seniors Lindsey Zieglar and Valeriya Monko defeated the team of Saenko and Eloundou from EMU, 6-4. Junior Polina Khotko and senior Karin Hamilton defeated Eastern's Vichare and Quiroz, 6-3. The third win came from sophomore Ariane Souligny and freshman Sofia Balsera, earning a victory over Cleveland State's Oihane Vicario and Mikaela Konstantinova 7-6 (11-9).

In the opening round of singles play, Zielgar and Monko both earned two-set wins. Zieglar defeated Katarina Dukic from Chicago State, 6-3, 6-2. Monko also defeated her CSU counterpart, Sofiya Sedovich 6-4, 6-3. Balsera was the lone singles winner in the second round, beating Eastern Michigan's Daniella Shved 6-4, 6-3. Zieglar later picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Popma from Oakland, while Hamilton earned a 7-5, 6-3 win over Chicago State's Manuella Elounder. Khotko picked up her first singles win of the weekend after she defeated CSU's Ethel LI 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Julia Frazier also earned a win, beating Konstantinova 6-3, 7-6 (7-3),

SATURDAY RECAP
Saturday opened with two rounds of doubles play, with the Broncos going a combined 4-2. Zieglar paired up with Khotko this time and defeated Edie Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen from Oakland, 6-3. Balsera and sophomore Audrey Smitek beat OU's Popma and Tara Montreuil 6-1. Souligny and Monko played together and earned  win over the Grizzlies' Aya Orenstain and Alma Orenstain, 6-1. The fourth win came from Souligny and Monko in round two, beating Cleveland State's Vicario and Konstantinova 7-6 (7-5).

In the final round of singles, Zieglar completed her undefeated weekend, picking up her third win after taking down EMU's Daniella Shved 6-3, 6-1. Souligny beat Cleveland State's Tereze Vevere, 6-3, 6-3, while Khotko earned a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win over the Vikings' Selma Tounsi. Balsera picked up her second win over the weekend after beating Oakland's Aya Orenstain 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Western Michigan resumes action Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. when it hosts Ferris State.
