ATLANTA, Ga. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team dropped Friday's contest to Georgia State 71-58. In her second game as a Bronco,
Kaitlyn Zarycki scored a career-high 21 points at the division one level to lead the WMU offense. Zarycki's teammate
Maggie Stutelberg added 16 points after hitting five three-pointers Friday evening.
After finding themselves in an early 11-5 deficit in the first quarter, Western Michigan fought back and would eventually cut the Panther's lead to one after an offensive surge by Zarycki,
Hannah Spitzley, and Stutelberg. The trio helped WMU outscore Georgia State, with Stutelberg capping off the run by knocking down one of her five three-pointers on the evening with 10 seconds remaining in the quarter. Stutelberg's three would pull the Brown and Gold within one at 13-12 as time expired in the quarter.
Feeding off of the momentum from the trio, the Broncos exploded offensively in the second quarter, nearly doubling up Georgia State by scoring 21 points.
The Broncos took a 33-25 lead at the break after Zarycki and Stutelberg led the Broncos with 12 and 11 points each. After two quarters of play, Stutelberg knocked down four threes while shooting from a 50% clip from range.
The women's basketball team would lead by as many as 13 points in the third quarter with the help of Zarycki, who would either score or assist on four of the team's five possessions spanning over three minutes beginning at the 8:05 mark in the quarter.
In the fourth, the Brown and Gold saw its largest lead in the quarter at three, off a jumper by Ali Carlson, which put the Broncos ahead with 8:35 remaining in the contest. However, during the game's final 7:46 in regulation, WMU was limited to seven points. With 1:28 remaining in the contest, Zarycki hit two free throws to pull the Broncos within seven.
Tonight, the guard Zarycki scored a personal best 21 points with the Brown and Gold after shooting 7-16 from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the stripe.
On the boards,
Jasmine Elder collected a career-high seven rebounds with the Broncos.
